A BIT MORE ABOUT ME I’ve lived in New York most of my life. I was born in Rochester in 1967 and moved to Ithaca when I was 7. I was a creative kid. I loved to draw. I loved to build. I loved to take things apart. I tried to put them back. I was also good at math. Mix 1 part Creativity + 1 part Math and what do you get? An Engineer! In fairness I originally wanted to be an architect. My journey included a few twists and turns. Read on. ENGINEERING 1.0 I received my bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University in 1989. After graduation I went to work in Syracuse, New York doing site development projects for Obrien & Gere Engineers. My work focused on NYSDOT Highway design, residential subdivisions, and commercial site development. Then the 1991 recession hit. Site development work dried up, so the company shipped me to New Jersey for a year doing hazardous waste remediation. ARCHITECTURE 1.0 In 1992, after a year of unwanted exposure to contaminated groundwater and other organic compounds, I decided to pivot and was accepted in a graduate program for Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (That lasted 2 weeks – don’t ask). ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE 0.0 25 years old, and unemployed, I moved back to NY. ENGINEERING 2.0 Late in 1992 I was back in New Jersey working for Spillane Engineering, a small municipal and site development firm. Over the next 4 years I worked on an array of projects including residential septic systems, residential subdivisions, commercial site developments, municipal utility projects (water distribution, sanitary sewers, stormwater collection systems), municipal highways, layout, grading, and utility design. And, of course, all those projects required permits from the many local, state and federal agencies. I applied for many, many permits. I also was exposed to municipal approvals and represented a number of local municipalities as municipal engineer. ENGINEERING 3.0 In 1996 I said goodbye to New Jersey and made my way back home, to New York. I landed a job at The Sear Brown Group in Elmira. Sear Brown was a full-service Architectural and Engineering firm which exposed me to collaborating with in-house Architects, Landscape Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, and Plumbing Engineers. In early 1997 I was promoted from Senior Engineer to Civil Engineering Manager, my first experience managing staff. ENGINEERING 4.0 My short, but intense, experience at The Sear Brown Group prepared me for the next 14 years. In 1997 I was back in Ithaca, New York working for The Thomas Group Architects and Engineers (Now Tetra Tech). I came in as the only Civil Engineer amongst an experienced group of Landscape Architects. After a few years I was promoted from Senior Civil Engineer to head of the Civil Engineering Department where I supervised 10 staff of Landscape Architects and Civil Engineers. I was then promoted to Associate, gained a minor ownership stake, and took on greater responsibilities as Co-Operations Manager for the Ithaca office. In that position I managed over 100 Architectural and Engineering staff. ENGINEERING 5.0 In 2004 I felt the urge to leave the Corporate environment and go back to work for a smaller firm. I reached out to T.G. Miller, P.C. Engineers and Surveyors where I had worked one summer during college. I joined the T.G. Miller team as a Senior Civil Engineer and after 2 years became a partner in the firm. The work at T.G. Miller mirrored that of my time at Spillane Engineering with a focus on Municipal Engineering and Private Development but added a third specialty - Higher Education. Over 17 years at T.G. Miller I had the pleasure of working on projects within the Finger Lakes and Central New York across all 3 market sectors. I represented the Town of Dryden as Municipal Engineer for 5 years then turned my attention to Private Development and Higher Education projects. ENGINEERING 5.1 As COVID hit us all in 2020 and we were forced to work from home I found myself enjoying the freedom it offered. By mid-2020 I decided I would retire from T.G. Miller to pursue a solo consulting career and Sciarabba Engineering, PLLC was born. I finished an extremely rewarding career at T.G. Miller on June 30, 2021 to run Sciarabba Engineering, PLLC full-time. RECAP I’ve worked for large, medium, and small companies. Some were purely engineering firms, some engineering and surveying firms, and others full-service architectural and engineering firms. I have been a surveyor’s apprentice, a design engineer, a division manager, an operations manager, and a partner. I have completed survey work, engineering work and even dabbled in architectural design. Engineering + design always come together. It is necessary that they do in order to have a successful project.
